Kadalai Parupu Sundal

Festivals are fun.. especially when it involves meeting a lot of people. Navarathri – a festival for 9 days (Nav means 9 and rathiri means night) is one such festivals. Every evening we visit our friends and relatives house to see the golu (arrangement of dolls), sing songs (if we have to) and collect this lovely prasadam of Sundal. Each house might have a different sundal and it will be a lovely occasion to see all the cute dolls arranges and different decorations..Sundal can be served as light tiffin or snack. It is a very healthy dish and made mainly with lentils and beans. Great thing about sundal is that it can be served at room temperature, makes a great evening tiffin and is so healthy and delicious.. I loved this as a kid and my daughter loves this too!!!!

Ingredients
Kadalai Parupu / Channa Dal– 1 cup
Asafetida – A pinch
Salt – ½ tea spoon
Mustard Seeds – ½ tea spoon
Shredded Coconut – 1/3 cup
Curry Leaves – 10 leaves washed and cut into half side ways
Red Chili – 2
Oil – 1 tea spoon
Water – To boil the Parupu

Method
Soak the kadalai parupu in lukewarm water for 2 hours.
Heat water in a thick bottom vessel and add the kadalai parupu.
Add salt, asafetida to it
It will take about 7 minutes to be ready.
Take one kadalai parupu from the vessel and try to press it, if it get pressed with little force then it is ready.
It should not be too easy to press, then it means that it is well cooked and it will become like a paste.
Remove the kadalai parupu from heat and drain excess water if any and spread it to a plate.
Heat 1 tea spoon of oil in a pan.
Add Mustard seeds and when it starts to splutter, add the red chili and curry leaves and then add the cooked kadalai parupu.
Mix it well and add the coconut and mix it well.
Remove from heat and it is ready to be served
