Tomato Rasam (தக்காளி ரசம்)

Tomato Rasam is an everyday food in Tamilnadu. It is very aromatic and tasty food which is quite simple to make. There are many forms of rasam like tomato Rasam, Mysore Rasam, pineapple rasam, kalyana rasam, lemon rasam etc. This recipe is for tomato rasam.

IngredientsTamarind – 1 small lemon sized
Water – 5 cups
Tuvaram Parupu – 1/4 cup
Turmeric Powder – ½ + ¼ tea spoon
Salt – 1 ½ tea spoon
Rasam Powder – 1 table spoon
Coriander leaves – 1 table spoon
Curry leaves – 6
Ghee – 1 table spoon
Cumin Seeds – ½ tea spoon
Red chili – 2
Asafetida – ¼ tea spoon
Tomato – 2
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tea spoon

Method
Soak the tamarind in lukewarm water for at least 5 minutes
Cut the tomatoes and keep aside
Boil the tuvaram parupu along with adding 1 cup of water and ¼ tea spoon of turmeric powder
Once boiled, mash the tuvaram parupu to a paste and keep it aside
Heat a pan and add the cut tomatoes and tamarind juice
Once this boils, add turmeric powder, asafetida and Rasam powder
Add 2 cups water and allow this mixture to boil for 4 minutes
Add salt and tuvaram parupu
Once this comes to a boil, add remaining water and let it come to a boil
Heat a small pan and add ghee
Add mustard seeds and once it crackles, add cumin seeds and sauté for 30 seconds add curry leaves and add red chili and sauté for 15 seconds and add this to the rasam
Garnish with coriander and cover with a lid for 5 minutes
Rasam is now ready to be served hot!!
