Toffai is a type of dosai made with Tofu. I was looking for a stylish name for the recipe and this name (suggested by my dad) is what I liked from the suggestions received..
Kind of cool….Think about calcium rich food and first thing that comes to people’s mind is milk and its products, but many may not recognize that Tofu is also very rich in Calcium. I got this recipe from here and modified it a bit. This dish can be made to vegan by substituting soy milk for milk. A very nice breakfast recipe.
Ingredients
Tofu - 1/2 block – around 170 grams
Kadalai Maavu / Besan - 1 table spoon
Arisi Maavu / Rice Flour - 1 table spoon
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Asafetida - 1/8 tea spoon
Ginger - 1 table spoon (grated)
Curry Leaves - 1 table spoon (chopped fine)
Coriander Leaves - 1 table spoon (chopped fine)
Milk - 1/2 cup (adjust to need)
Water - As needed
Oil - to cook the toffai
Salt – 3/4 tea spoon

Method
In a blender, add tofu, turmeric powder, asafetida, salt and make to a smooth paste. Now add milk, besan and rice flour and make it to a runny batter
Heat a tawa and lightly grease it with oil
Add coriander leaves, curry leaves, ginger, green chili to the batter and set aside
Some points to remember are having a good non-stick pan as tofu tends to stick a lot. The batter needs to be runny and not thick as thicker batter dosa will break easily and will lead to scrambled tofu
Add a ladle of batter to the tawa and cook it covered on slow flame
When golden on the other side, slowly flip the toffai caring to not break it
Cook the other side and serve hot.
It tastes good as is, but a tomato ketchup or coconut chutney would be good to accompany.
If the batter becomes thicker after sometime, add little water to bring it to the runny batter consistency

Points to note – Tofu (from about.com) - One half-cup serving of firm tofu contains about 227 mg of calcium or about 22% of the RDA. Tofu may contain a little bit less calcium depending on the brand and the way it was made so be sure to read the label if you're concerned. Silken tofu contains approximately 133 mg, again depending on the brand. For each 100 calorie serving, tofu contains 11 grams of protein. One half-cup serving of firm tofu contains about 1.82 mg of iron, though this can vary greatly, depending on the brand. The RDA for women is 18 mg, and 8 mg for men.
