Thakkali Kootu / Tomato Kootu

Quick meal??? The first thing that comes to my mind is this kootu with steaming hot rice... This one is a life saver as it takes very few ingredients, not much preparation and the meal is very comforting and tasty...

Ingredients
Tomato - 6
Green Chili - 4 (adjust to taste)
Coconut - 2 table spoons
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tea spoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tea spoon
Urad Dal / Ulutham Parupu - 1 tea spoon
Asafetida - 1/8 tea spoon
Salt - 1 1/2 tea spoons
Oil - 1 table spoon
Curry Leaves - 10
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tea spoon + 1/2 tea spoon
Paasi Parupu / Yellow Moong Dal - 1/3 cup

Method
Pressure cook the dal with 1/4 tea spoon turmeric and 2/3 cup water until well done
Mash it well and set aside
Cut the tomatoes into 1 inch pieces (roughly) and set aside
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds
Once the mustard seeds crackle, add the urad dal and red chili and saute until the dal becomes golden
Add the curry leaves, tomatoes, asafetida, turmeric powder and saute for 2 minutes
Now add a cup of water and let it come to a boil
Blend together cumin seeds, green chili and coconut to a coarse paste and set aside
Add the mashed dal to the tomato and allow it to boil
Add the grinded paste and add about a cup of water.
When it comes to a rolling boil, remove from heat and serve hot!!
Serve this with roti or rice!!

  4. This is so interesting. I make kootu with all the other vegetables, but never thought of trying it with tomatoes. I will be making it soon :)
