Simple Gothsu – A perfect Side

Some recipes have exact measurements and cooking methods, while some recipes are very personalized and differs from house to house. This gothsu falls into the second category.. A very simple, homey and a comforting food to enjoy as a side to the idli, dosa, pongal, upuma or even mix it with hot rice and enjoy!!!

Ingredients

Payatham Parupu / Yellow Split Moong Dal - 1/2 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tea spoon + 1/2 tea spoon
Asafetida - 1/4 tea spoon
Onion - 1 cup (diced)
Tomato - 1/2 cup (diced)
Coriander Leaves - 2 table spoons
Curry Leaves - 10
Red Chili - 3
Red Chili Powder - 1/2 tea spoon (optional)
Green Chili - 2 (slit cut)
Salt - 1 1/2 tea spoons
Garlic - 3 cloves (optional)
Ginger - 1 tea spoon (grated)
Oil - 1 - 2 table spoons
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tea spoon

Method
Pressure cook the dal with 1 cup water and 1/4 tea spoon turmeric until well done. About 3 whistles.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, once it crackles, add the cumin seeds and the red chili
After 10 seconds, add the ginger, garlic, green chili and curry leaves
Cook for 30 seconds and add onions and salt and cook until the onions are translucent
Add the tomatoes, 1/2 tea spoon turmeric powder, asafetida, red chili powder and cook until the tomatoes are well cooked
Add 1/4 cup water and once it boils, add the boiled dal and mix well. Add more water if needed for desired consistency
Once the dal comes to a boil, garnish with coriander Leaves and remove from flame..
Enjoy the delicious dal!!!
