Misal is a gravy made with white peas and is a very popular in the street food called Misal Pav. We were given this Misal Pav as a part of the Southern team for the North vs South Challenge. You can use regular pav buns available, but I used homemade buns (recipe to follow soon)
Ingredients
White Peas - 1 cup (soaked overnight and pressure cook for 2 whistles)
Onion - 3
Tomato - 2
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Garlic - 6 cloves
Coconut - 1/4 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Red Chili Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Amchur Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Garam Masala - 1/2 tea spoon
Coriander Powder - 1 tea spoon
Salt - 1/2 tea spoon + 1 tea spoon
Asafetida - A pinch
Coriander Leaves - 1/4 cup (finely chopped)
Oil - 1 table spoon + 3 table spoons
Mixture - 2 table spoons (for topping)
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tea spoon
Onion - 3
Tomato - 2
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Garlic - 6 cloves
Coconut - 1/4 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Red Chili Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Amchur Powder - 1/2 tea spoon
Garam Masala - 1/2 tea spoon
Coriander Powder - 1 tea spoon
Salt - 1/2 tea spoon + 1 tea spoon
Asafetida - A pinch
Coriander Leaves - 1/4 cup (finely chopped)
Oil - 1 table spoon + 3 table spoons
Mixture - 2 table spoons (for topping)
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tea spoon
Homemade Pav (recipe coming soon)
Method
Soak the white peas overnight or 8 hours and pressure cook with 1/2 tea spoon salt for 2 whistles and set aside
Heat a table spoon of oil in a pan and sauté onions, garlic, ginger and green chili until soft
Add tomatoes and cook until they are mushy. Add coconut and sauté for a minute more and add a handful from the boiled peas and mix all well
Remove from heat and grind to a paste when cooled
Heat 3 table spoons in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once cumin seeds splutter, reduce the heat to low, add the dry spices (turmeric powder, coriander powder, amchur powder, red chili powder, asafetida and garam masala) and roast them all on very low flame. Ensure that they flame is very low as they can burn very easily
After 30 seconds, add the grinded paste and mix well and increase the flame to medium high. After 2 minutes of cooking, add 1 cup of water and bring it to a boil
Add the boiled peas and cook for 5 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and mixture and serve hot.
